INCLUSIVE CYCLING We went on our first outing wit INCLUSIVE CYCLING

We went on our first outing with EJ’s new @delichonltd Delta Trail on the 8km cycle trail at the beautiful @highlodge_thetford forest this weekend!
It was amazing to be able get out on a longer family bike ride again! Wheeeeee! 🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♂️👩‍🦽

Since EJ outgrew our @myzigo cargo trike around 5 years ago, we’ve not been able to all get out on a longer ride together, so this is the first time we’ve gone on a whole family outing since her bro (9yrs) has been able to cycle more than a few km himself!

EJ also has an adaptive trike which is great for her to pedal herself and can convert to a bike tag along, but it isn’t comfortable for her over long distances, and only works for circular routes where she can have access to her wheelchair at the destination. So until now we’ve had to split up or go out separately.

Whereas with the Delta Trail, the front ‘buggy’ wheel comes with you, underneath the chair, and at the end of the ride you can pop it back on and have the Delta buggy to use as a wheelchair at your destination (although being a big off road chair it’s not ideal in urban locations).

I think we are going to get a lot of use out of it! For cycling and for off road walks 👩‍🦽🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♂️

I just wish (in our cycle friendly city of Cambridge) that cycle paths actually joined up and widths and intersections were consistently designed for wider adaptive cycles… hopefully things are improving bit by bit (thanks to cargo bikes being quite mainstream here) but in the meantime we’ll have to keep being selective about routes we choose.

It seems to be one thing after another in our #Inc It seems to be one thing after another in our #InclusiveHome at the moment.
Rare bear seemed to have avoided most of the bugs her brother has had, but she’s branching out and this week has an ear infection.
She was quite unsettled Weds & Thurs but thankfully is a lot more chirpy today.
She’s been remarkably good about having her antibiotic ear drops. Due to her learning disability, she needs to be encouraged and supported to lie down and to stay still. I was a bit concerned she’d object, as it is an odd feeling having ear drops, but she’s been pretty relaxed about the whole thing.
We’re now chilling on the sofa watching Song of the Sea (an animated Irish film, with lovely graphics and music, featuring a little non-verbal girl who transforms into a seal, inspired by the Celtic myths of the Selkies! Perhaps my sensory girl has some Selkie DNA - she does love the water!) 🦭😀❤️

Wearing my zebra print shoes on for the school run this morning 😀

Did you know the zebra is a symbol of rare disease because doctors used to be taught ‘if you hear hoof beats think horses’, meaning it’s usually what you think it is… but with 1 in 17 people affects by a rare condition, doctors really need to consider that it could be a zebra! 🦓
Happy Valentines Day! We’ve not yet found the be Happy Valentines Day!
We’ve not yet found the best way to communicate with 12 year old EJ. We know she understands a lot more of what we say and sign to her than people might think and we have been trying more symbols and images (printed and on screen).
Today EJ’s #RareBear friend has found the ‘I love you’ symbol on the @assistiveware #proloquo2go AAC app that we’re all trying out at the moment ❤️

#DisabilityPriceTag EJ is now too tall for her t #DisabilityPriceTag

EJ is now too tall for her travel bed (pictured) which is a mainstream Intex inflatable kids bed with bumper sides all around = £60

Rather than paying big bucks for a safe space type travel bed I was looking for a single bed size equivalent of what she currently has (with continuous bumpers on all sides) and the closest I’ve found are specialist ‘safe sides’ inflatable bumpers, that don’t even include the mattress as they are designed to be used with a standard mattress = £1216 😱

If only they made paddling pools in single bed dimensions, I could slot a camping mattress in!

EJ doesn’t need full sides, just something to keep her from rolling out, but without any gaps she could burrow into and get trapped in.
